When we heard the prospect of Microsoft giving away Windows 10 upgrade to all its users (even the non-buyers), it felt "too good to be true". While Windows isn't as closed as Mac OS but till they have never openly vouched for the three-fold distribution of Windows being pirated ones.
That changed earlier this week with reports quoting Microsoft representative indicating change in stance to drive up the penetration of upcoming Windows version. However, it looks like we made assumptions without understanding the nuances of the free upgrade development that has caught everyone's attention.
More updates on this front sourced from Microsoft suggest that the upgrade planning more than just about 'free' offering to everyone. "We will provide a mechanism for non-genuine Windows 10 PC devices to 'get genuine' via the new Windows Store, whether they are upgraded versions of Windows or purchased," a Microsoft person was quoted saying in the report.
What does anyone make out of the statement? It's hard to decipher what Microsoft wants everyone to make out from their announcement which, one must understand wasn't made out to the public. Microsoft has made it clear that this upgrade practice will be followed in the same manner across all its markets, which in that case should definitely include India.
All said and done we'll need more clarity on this entire upgrade saga and hope Microsoft decides to speak out on the subject real soon. In the meanwhile, we'll try reaching out to Microsoft India to get their understanding on the same.
