The Nvidia Shield range is being extended to encompass a gaming and streaming video device (there is already an Nvidia Shield tablet and gaming handheld). “The best Android gaming on the go” is the company’s slogan for the so-called “microconsole”.
Announced at GDC (Games Developer Conference), running in San Francisco, it is apparently Nvidia’s first dedicated TV device. It is also described it as a (60 fps) 4K-capable Android set-top-box. Think of it as a powerful set-top box with a gaming service…
A key point is that it will run a selection of optimised Android titles natively, with 50 games available at launch. It isn’t just a streaming service.
The titles will be streamed from the accompanying, Cloud-powered Nvidia Grid game streaming service.
Interestingly, the device is based on Google’s Android TV platform, and is powered by an Nvidia Tegra X1, with a 256-core Nvidia Maxwell GPU and 3GB of RAM and up to 16GB of storage.
