New Update To Google Maps Application Brings The Local Guides Feature
Google Maps has started receiving a new feature called Local Guides, which is a review system for places like restaurants, hotels etc. This works exactly like in Yelp, Foursquare and other user reviews oriented services, where the feedback of other users can make lives easier for tourists. This comes after Google introduced the new lane guidance feature in India across 20 cities.
The reviews will be volume oriented and Google doesn't seem to have an authenticity check in place. Regardless, this is a good feature to have on Google Maps and will ensure that new users don't get misguided. Interested reviewers can sign up for Google's Local Guides service from the company's dedicated page here.
Users who write more than 50 reviews will get a star badge on their profile, which could mean that their reviews will feature on top of the rest. So the more places you review, it's more likely that your word is heard by the users.
It seems like the feature is only rolling out to Android users, but since Google Maps is also available on iOS, we don't think an update should be far away.
In its official post, Google says - "Through Local Guides, an official Google program, you can share your firsthand local experiences, celebrate places near and far from home, connect with a global community of explorers like you, and help local businesses improve their products and services."
This feature will also make sure that businesses strive to improve and act on user suggestions. The feature is said to be reaching devices with version 9.4 of Google Maps, so if you received an update recently on the Play Store, this feature could be built in.
