Next Release Of Android Wear To Introduce Wi-Fi Support

A new report from The Verge suggests that Android Wear could get a major overhaul with the next major update. It is said that Google will enable support for Wi-Fi connectivity for smartwatches, allowing users to connect their wearables to the smartphone that way.

In its current form, Android Wear is only connectible over Bluetooth. It is said that the app arrangement on the platform will be significantly improved as well, making it easier to access. Google is also believed to be adding a new contacts app, which might probably allow users to initiate a phone call on their handset. The precise functionality of these features are not known at this point, but we're guessing Google will share details on that soon.

There is talk of new gesture controls being introduced with the new update, wherein a user can scroll through the notifications on the smartwatch by just flicking the wrist. As for the Wi-Fi feature, not every Android Wear smartwatch out there has the necessary hardware to support this, so its availability might be limited to the new breed of smartwatches along with the Moto 360, which is the most popular Android Wear device.

The arrival of these features will ensure that Android Wear remains competitive even with the presence of the Apple Watch. Although the two platforms won't exactly compete with each other, there is talk of Google eventually bringing Android Wear compatibility to non-Android devices. Keeping that in mind, the addition of these features could be very important for Google.
