Samsung Galaxy J1 4G LTE Smartphone Hands-On And First Impressions
At Samsung's Annual Forum 2015 which was held on Feb 16 in Bangkok, Thailand, the South Korea tech giant announced a series of 4G/LTE smartphones for India. The most affordable of these phones is the Samsung Galaxy J1, which has been priced at Rs 9,990 for India. We got a chance to experience the phone at the demo zone during the event. In this article, we share our hands on experience and first impressions about the same. It also has dual SIM card support.
The feel of the phone is very good and it does have a high build quality. It feels solid and has a chrome finish all around the front. The display size is 4.3 inches and makes it very compact and easy for one handed usage. It is appropriate for someone looking for a very handy and easy to pocket phone.

For most moderate users, the performance should not be a problem, but for heavy users and gamers, I would recommend looking for phones with more RAM and faster processors.
Priced at Rs 9,990, the Samsung Galaxy J1 is surely the lowest priced Samsung smartphones, but it is not the lowest priced 4G smartphone in India. You can't ignore the likes of the Lenovo A6000 or Yu Yureka or Redmi Note 4G, which come at prices ranging from Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000, feature larger displays, faster processors, etc.. Considering that Samsung phones are usually better built and are more durable compared to competing brands, it still makes sense for buyers who prefer going for brand value over specifications and features.
If you look at the Samsung Galaxy J1 as a standalone product, it does look like a good value for money, but looking at the competition, the value for money aspect seems to fade a bit. We will be able to tell you more when we use it for some more time, so stay tuned for our detailed review after we test the phone.
Size And Form Factor
The Galaxy J1 LTE is a compact and chunky phone which comes with very familiar design by Samsung that uses high quality plastic, a physical home key under the display which has two touch buttons on both the sides. Beside this, there is volume rocker on the left and power key on the right. Apart from this, the Smartphone is also equipped with a 3.5 mm audio jack on top and charging port and primary microphone on the bottom. The phone carries a removable battery of 1850mAh and there are two SIM card slots under the hood. Also there is a memory card expansion slot to expand the memory as the internal memory is limited to 4GB only. On the camera front, the phone has 5MP rear and 2MP front cameras. The feel of the phone is very good and it does have a high build quality. It feels solid and has a chrome finish all around the front. The display size is 4.3 inches and makes it very compact and easy for one handed usage. It is appropriate for someone looking for a very handy and easy to pocket phone.
Display Quality
There is a 4.3-inch display with WVGA TFT technology. The colors on the display look rich and well saturated. The quality of display looks very good on a 4.3-inch screen even with a meagre 480x800 pixel resolution. The viewing angles are also fairly nice.Performance
If you are looking for a high performance gaming phone, the Galaxy J1 is not for you. But if you are looking for something which can browse Internet, run social networking apps, play videos, music and instant messaging, the phone will not disappoint you. The reason I say this is that the phone features a fairly fast 1.2GHz CPU which can run apps smoothly, but has only 768MB of RAM which limits the ability to run heavy games and very demanding apps. For most moderate users, the performance should not be a problem, but for heavy users and gamers, I would recommend looking for phones with more RAM and faster processors.
Cameras
There are decent quality of cameras on both front and rear. For a 5MP camera, the quality is good enough for regular picture taking, but don't expect too high detailing as it is after all a 5MP sensor. But the front facing camera is pretty good as 2MP sensor for taking selfies is usually good enough as selfies are taken from a very short distance, thus it captures enough details.

Pricing And Value For Money
